Job Description

POLITICO is seeking a creative, dynamic and strategic leader to drive the growth of POLITICO's flagship Playbook franchise across platforms. Managing and working in close collaboration with Playbook's editors and reporting talent - and working with other Washington-focused journalists throughout the newsroom, most notably the Congress team - the Executive Producer will be responsible for the overall creative development, execution and distribution of Playbook, including shaping the editorial direction of the franchise's daily newsletters and audio podcasts. The Executive Producer will also lead development and execution of a strategy for the expansion of the brand across platforms, in partnership with the newsroom leadership team, the audience and data/insights team, the media solutions team, and the marketing/communications teams, among others. The Executive Producer will also work in partnership with the Congress Executive Producer to refine and advance engagement with Congressional influencers across the suite of products under the Playbook and Congress umbrellas.

Success as the Playbook Executive Producer means the content has even greater impact, reaches a highly influential audience of professional politicos, yields an increase in revenue of 20%, and is viewed with envy by competitors in DC and nationally. Additionally, success means building a sustainable and scalable strategy that can be modified as necessary to fuel growth across the full suite of POLITICO's global Playbook products.

The ideal candidate has exceptional editorial judgment; a proven track record of leading high-impact journalism and journalists, while driving audience engagement across multiple platforms; a drive for growth; a shrewd mind regarding the business of journalism; and excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, multiplatform content and editorial strategy aligned with the Playbook franchise's editorial goals; lead the potential expansion of the franchise across new platforms.
  • Support and elevate Playbook's editors by giving them the tools to ensure Playbook is the best-edited publication in its competitive space.
  • Collaborate with senior management to establish and achieve revenue, audience, and engagement targets.
  • Analyze audience data, feedback, and metrics to optimize content performance and drive audience loyalty. Collaborate with marketing, communications, and audience teams on strategies that will deepen awareness in the marketplace.
  • Foster a culture of innovation within the Playbook team, while also building partnerships to leverage creative leaders throughout POLITICO's newsroom.
  • Lead collaboration and information sharing between the DC Playbook team and other POLITICO Playbook teams domestically and overseas. Also lead collaboration with other Washington-focused journalists, particularly the Congress team.
  • Inspire, motivate and manage the DC Playbook team, including Playbook's reporters, editors, and two podcast producers.

What You'll Need:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in journalism, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Strong editorial judgment with a proven ability to set and drive editorial and creative direction across a large team and across multiple platforms.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to think creatively, adapt to change, and drive results in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Knowledge of the business of media and desire to evolve a thriving business model for journalism.
  • Agility and creativity when faced with increased competition and changing market dynamics.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

What Success in this Position Looks Like:

  • Increase Playbook's multiplatform revenues in collaboration with business colleagues by 20%
  • Achieve double digit subscriber growth annually
  • Sharpen the Playbook brand promise of immersing readers in the Washington political conversation of the moment
  • Further cement Playbook as the morning "must-read" for the Capitol Hill audience, as measured through audience research, and architect a plan for building a community around Playbook in partnership with the brand team and business teams
  • Establish Playbook podcasts as must-listens for our target Washington audiences
