Job Summary:

We are looking for a hydrogeologist to help drive our agency towards accomplishing our vision. This position will be directly responsible for managing projects and/or conducting technical reviews within the Corrective Action Unit of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section at ADEQ. Specifically, the successful candidate will develop strategic plans, evaluate and update conceptual site models, recommend strategies for accelerating site cleanups, coordinate with responsible parties and contractors, develop and maintain performance measure for remedy, and manage contaminated sites to closure. You will also be responsible for managing budgets related to complex scopes of work for multiple sites, while interacting with the public, responsible parties and contractors.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties:

• Management of project budgets related to various scopes of work

• Review of complex corrective action issues and facilities

• Oversight of remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil from underground storage tank UST releases

• Participation in site visits, data collection, inspections and investigations regarding environmental impacts from USTs

• Analyzes environmental groundwater concentration data for basic trends

• Analyzes hydrogeologic data to understand contaminant transport characteristics

• Mentoring level 1 and 2 hydrogeologists

• Proactively supports the Leaking UST Preapproval Program

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of environmental restoration, remedial investigations, wide range of knowledge with various contaminant constituents including fuels and VOCs, groundwater plumes, operations and maintenance, vapor intrusion, principles of ground and surface water flow, principles of fate and transport of chemicals in ground and surface water, State and Federal environmental regulations; environmental sciences and research

• Ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statues, to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks, to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication

Selective Preference(s):

• Bachelor of science degree in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, environmental management/science/studies or sustainability

• Level 3: 5+ years’ experience (Masters degree in related field can substitute for 2 years of experience, Doctorate in related field can substitute for 4 years of experience)

• Direct experience managing investigation and remediation projects using multiple remediation technologies at sites with complicated site conditions (fractured bedrock, clay formations, etc.)

• Experience with risk-based closures and risk assessments

• Familiar with UST and Leaking UST rules and regulations preferred

• OSHA 40-hour Hazwoper preferred

• “Professional Geologist” certification through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent organization in a reciprocal jurisdiction is preferred

• Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license required. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks. Must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training
