This position is responsible for providing both direct and indirect non-professional patient care to patients of the emergency department under the direction of licensed professional nursing staff. This position will provide cardiac monitoring for cardiac monitored patients in the emergency department as well as those monitored by pulse oximetry and vital sign machines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High School diploma or equivalent

2. Completion of BLS within 90 days of hire.

3. Completion of the Basic dysrhythmia course within 90 days of hire or receipt of a passing score on a basic dysrhythmia test in lieu for individuals with monitoring experience.

1. Prior experience in a hospital setting

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Assists in direct patient care by providing basic physical care to promote patient comfort as directed by the registered nurse.

2. Cleans and prepares rooms for the next patient's arrival.

3. Maintains and cleans assigned patient care areas, staff work areas and unit equipment according to departmental procedure.

4. Performs glucose monitoring and specimen collections as per hospital policy and as assigned by registered nurse.

5. Obtains and records assigned patients temperatures, pulse rate, respiratory rates, blood pressure, intake and outputs, weights according to department policy. Reports unexpected results to nurse.

6. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedures.

7. Works closely with providers to direct and arrange care of patients.

8. When assigned to the desk, monitors all patients placed on a cardiac or vital sign monitor by use of the central cardiac station, documents every shift in EMR, and reports any outlying or changes in patient status to the nurse.

9. Properly enters and deletes patient information from EMR at time of admission, transfer and/or discharge.

10. Communicates hand-off shift reports on all monitored patients to on coming staff.

11. Monitors equipment for and assists with trouble shooting of malfunctioning equipment. Reports failures to Biomed and reports these issues and outcomes to the charge nurse.

12. Courteously answers telephones, identifying self and unit at all times and relays accurate and clear messages to appropriate receiver, documenting in a timely manner.

13. Communicates and interacts with patients, families, visitors, departmental and hospital staff, and the public in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for the individuals need.

1. Heavy/hard work: work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking. Handling of materials and equipment weighing up to 50lbs. Pushing/pulling cares weighing up to 200lbs. note: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients, and limit safe patient handling to 35lbs. All transfers, lifts and re-positioning will be completed utilizing the lift equipment and /or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patients and appropriate algorithms.

2. Ability to visually monitor several computer screens with multiple cardiac rhythms, pulse oximetry waveforms for sustained periods of time. (vision/hearing within normal limits)

3. Ability to sit for long periods of time as well as walk and stand for the same.

1. Demonstrates competency in the use of Safe Patient Handling Equipment

2. Ability to troubleshoot technology with Health Care Technology and clinical staff

3. Demonstrates basic computer knowledge and skills

4. Demonstrates good verbal and writing skills.

5. Able to work as a cooperative, focused team player, take direction well, and display a positive attitude to work with the patients, nursing staff, and physicians.

6. Able to display good organizational skills and the ability to multi-task to keep track of a large number of patients.

7. Ability to utilize a computer and other equipment.
